6. Adding Additional Pages (and Links to Them)
What would a writing portfolio website be without writing samples? I needed a list of links on my Writing Samples page that could take site visitors to subpages containing individual works.
I had to create separate subpages for each sample article and upload the written content to them before I could make them accessible from the Writing Samples page.
For each writing sample I followed the following steps:
From the dashboard, I clicked Pages > Add New.
I clicked Add Title and typed in the title I had given my sample article. Under that, I added a paragraph block. I simply pasted the text of my article onto the page.
It looked good, so I clicked Publish.
Before I was finished, I had to add a link to access the article from the site’s Writing Samples page. To do that, I clicked Copy Link (to save the URL to my pasteboard).
Then I navigated back to my Writing Samples page to incorporate a link that would allow access to the newly added article page.
With the page in Edit mode, I was able to make the addition.
I merely had to add a paragraph block, type in the title of the article and activate the link using the link icon on the Block Editor menu, pasting the URL to designate the link’s destination.
Then I clicked Update and the link made the article accessible to my site’s visitors.
I proceeded to make similar changes to the other pages on my site, using the same methods.
I made improvements to the images and design elements to liven up my website, and added text to introduce myself and my work. Of course, I included links to plenty of other subpages I created to display additional writing samples as well.
Your needs and preferences are likely to be different from mine, so I won’t get into every change I made, but I hope this tutorial was helpful.
Believe it or not, I only covered the basics. I didn’t even touch on the vast array of plug-ins and add-ons available to make WordPress websites even more customizable.
Still, learning this way was fun.
I hope you enjoy making your website as much as I enjoyed making mine.
